Keeping Pets Safe in Emergencies
If a natural disaster strikes, what will happen to your pet? While you may have an emergency kit for yourself already stocked, it’s important that you don’t forget about your four-legged friends. Leaving pets out of evacuation plans can put pets and pet owners in danger. Make a plan and pack a disaster kit for your pet!
Make a Plan
Disasters can happen without warning, so be prepared!
- Make sure your pet(s) wear collars and tags with current contact information
- Microchip your pet(s). This is one of the best ways to ensure that you and your pet are reunited if you’re separated.
- Purchase a sturdy pet carrier for each of your pets. Write his or her name on the front of the kennel, along with your name and contact information.
- Keep a leash near the front door.
- Ensure that you know where you and your pet would stay if you could not return to your home. Look for pet-friendly hotels and hostels.
Prepare a Disaster Kit
A disaster kit could mean the difference between life and death in the event of an emergency.
- Food and water for at least 2 weeks for each pet
- For cats: litter box and litter
- Any medications they may need
- Medical records (rabies vaccination certificate, microchip number, medical history, etc.)
- Sturdy leashes or harness
- Carrier or cage
- Pet toys and a bed that are familiar to them
Ensure that you have this plan in place so that you can protect your pet in an emergency.
